Brentwood

The Brentwood community in the northeast quadrant of Washington takes its name from Brentwood Mansion, built in 1817 by the first mayor of Washington City, Robert Brent. The greater Brentwood area is also home to Gallaudet University, the nation’s leading undergraduate and graduate school for the hearing impaired. The university was created by an act of Congress in 1864 and its charter was signed by President Abraham Lincoln.
